New Delhi: Paying homage to Indian soldiers who fought the war with China 50 years ago, Defence Minister AK Antony on Saturday said India has modernised its military infrastructure and stressed that its armed forces were capable of protecting the country against any such threat in future.

For the first time since the 1962 war, the Indian defence establishment officially honoured the martyrs and all those who participated in the war against China in which India lost a large portion of its territory.

Antony, along with his deputy, Minister of State for Defence MM Pallam Raju, Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh and the three services chiefs, paid homage to the 1962 war heroes and laid wreaths at Amar Jawan Jyoti - "the flame of the immortal soldier".

"I would like to assure the nation that India of today is not the India of 1962. Over the years, successive governments, learning lessons from the past, strengthened our capabilities and modernised our armed forces," Antony replied, when asked whether India was capable of tackling any threat from China in future.

"We are confident armed forces will be able to protect the border in the event of any threat," he said, on the sidelines of the event to remember and honour soldiers who valiantly tried to fight off Chinese aggression.

"We will vigorously continue to strengthen our capabilities," he stressed.

"Nothing changed. This is the 50th year and we thought this is the time the whole nation must pay homage to the officers and jawans who lost their lives to protect our border," Antony replied, when asked why the government decided to honour the soldiers and martyrs of the 1962 war 50 years later.

Antony stressed that the "major lesson" India has learnt from the 1962 war was that the country needed to strengthen its armed forces to protect the borders.

"That we are doing and now we are in a position to involve armed forces, intelligence agencies and all those involved in the protection of national security that process is much stronger," he said.

Alluding to the decades-long boundary dispute, Antony stressed that India was holding a dialogue with China to find a solution and has established a mechanism to "immediately settle" any tensions on the border.

Special representatives of India and China have held 15 rounds of talks to resolve the boundary dispute, but have not made much headway.

When asked about the government's decision on the Henderson Brookes report on the 1962 war, he said: "Let me take a decision."

The Defence Minister added that all issues relating to setting up of the national war memorial at India Gate have been resolved and it was in the final stages of being cleared by the government.

The Def Min paid homage for the first time and that was on behalf of the ministry. What about the homage on behalf of the nation by the President who also happens to be the Supreme Commander as per our constitution. In fact unlike other countries of the world our President never pays homage to our departed soldiers. Why?

The program by Zee TV was a great eye opener. It is hoped millions of youngsters today have become aware of our struggle. It makes us more realistic to the risks and threats to our national integrity. A good thing that I look forward is that the ground situation now is different than that of 1962. I feel if china attacks us today it would be a blunder for China. It is mostly hilly landscape and damage to it is comparatively more than India. Today China stands vulnerable owing to its rivers, dams and sensitive constructions on hills and gorges. India being essentially non-violent and peace loving state has all the bright future for progress. Let us no more fear the dragon. The dragon knows we now have world class arms equipment to counter any nefarious designs.

I was happy to watch 50 YEARS OF INDIA-CHINA WAR on NDTV yesterday. The experience narrated by the war veterans talking about the war they had fought was heart rending particularly how sad they have been since then to have lost the war. The program raised questions (1) AFTER 50 YEARS THE COUNTRY DOES NOT KNOW WHY THE WAR WAS FOUGHT (2) WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT, (3) WHY THE ENQUIRY REPORT WAS NOT PUBLIC TILL DATE.(4) DID WE LOOSE MORE TERRITORY DURING THE WAR OR AFTER IT and (5) WHAT ARE WE DOING TO GET BACK OUR LAND AND RESOURCES. HOW CAN THE PRIME MINISTER OR THE PRESIDENT ATTEND THE COMMEMORATION DAY TO SALUTE OUR WAR VETERANS DEAD OR ALIVE AFTER 50 YEARS WHEN THERE ARE QUESTION MARKS ON JAWAHARLAL NEHRU ON HIS POLITICAL WISDOM. THE LESS SAID THE BETTER is he doctrine followed today.

The Indo-China War still fresh to me as I was in my early teen and in Tezpur, only a few kilometers away from Bhalukpung and the Government already declared that very soon Assam may be lost to China, the mental patients of Tezpur mental hospital were allowed fredom to take care of themselves. However the great heart -the Superintenden(Director)t of the mental hospital Dr. N.Bordoloi refused to move out of the Hospital and leave the patients alone as they were so helpless! Luckily after a few days ceasefire was declared and people started coming back to their native places.Along with the martayers who fought for our security and today in the midst of severe terrains and cold weather, I offer my `Salute` to the Mental Hospital Superintendent, Tezpur who remained firm with the innocent mental patients during the period of utter disaster.

We ex.servicemen are happy that Nation is paying tribute to the Martyrs. We might have lost the war in 1962 but our Soldiers won the heart of this great Nation by their supreme sacrifice.Nation also realised the necessity of strengthening of our Armed Forces.More you sweat in peace, less you bleed in war.We have to be ever vigilant because our neighbours are not happy with our progress and it is the duty of every citizen of this grat nation to identify himself or herself as the soldier of the mother land and should be willing to sacrifies their comfort for the safety and security of the motherland. I pray my tribute to the Brave Martyers who have sacrificed their life to protect the territorial integrity of our motherland.JAI HIND, JAI JAWAN.
