HL Dattu likely to be next Chief Justice of India: Reports

New Delhi: Justice Handyala Lakshminarayanaswamy Dattu is most likely to take over as the next Chief Justice of India, media reports said on Wednesday.

According to government sources, the Centre has sent a file recommending HL Dattu's name to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for President Pranab Mukherjee's approval.

Dattu is presently a judge in the Supreme Court. He will replace CJI RM Lodha who retires on the 27th of September.

Justice Dattu will take charge as the CJI at a time when the BJP government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has brought in the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill which has scrapped the collegium system of appointing judges and calls for overhauling the judiciary.
