Sydney: Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has said that young Ashes star Steve Smith`s mature performance in the third Ashes Test at the WACA has stamped him as a future leader of Australia.
Chappell believes that Smith`s century at the WACA not only helped cement his reputation as an improved middle-order batsman and propel his team to a win that secured the Ashes, but also brought his name to the list of future captains for the team, which also includes explosive opener David Warner.
According to News.com.au, Chappell said that the fact that Smith`s batting continues to evolve is evidence of a good cricket brain, adding that this also shows up in two very important traits Smith displays; he sums up the situation quickly and positively, and holds his nerve.
Stating that Smith has many credentials that selectors look for in a captain along with his multiple playing skills, Chappell further said that Smith commands a permanent place in the side, is good in the field, durable and is not cowed by short-pitched bowling, adding that a captain needs to toughen against bullying from the opposition fast bowlers.
Although Chappell advised Smith to give both his leg-spinning and bat ting skills equal attention, he however, said that despite his youth, Smith is maturing like a `good red wine` and in another three to four years, which is the ideal age to take on the Australian captaincy, he should be a well-rounded cricketer and person.
Chappell also said that the time frame could fit perfectly with current skipper Michael Clarke`s schedule, as his dodgy back could have him ready to retire in three to four years, adding that Warner is the other young player who could be Smith`s rival for the captaincy as he has many similar traits to Smith although he also carries some baggage.
