Guwahati: The 13th Senior Women National Boxing Championship, hosted by Guwahati, was hailed by Olympic Bronze medallist M.C. Mary Kom on Wednesday.
"I am really happy that the Assam Boxing Association is organising the senior women nationals. In the past nationals we had faced a lot of problems, like the tournament was organised outdoors there was no roof. In summers the players suffered from exhaustion, in winters the boxers couldn`t warm-up. I am really happy that the Assam Boxing Association has made such a good arrangement for an indoor tournament. The participating boxers would be happy as the facilities that are provided meet international standards," said Mary Kom, who is not competing in this year`s championship to give opportunities to the younger pugilists. The flyweight was the guest of honour for the championship and it was a delight for the young girls, competing for different states, to perform in front of Mary Kom. The young boxers acknowledged Mary Kom`s contribution by calling her an inspiration to join the sport. Mary Kom is also a five-time world amateur boxing champion. Indian athletes returned with two silver and four bronze medals from London, the country`s biggest Olympic haul and equalling the collective tally of India`s previous seven campaigns in the quadrennial sporting event.
