Double life term for rape and murder for two persons in TN

Coimbatore: A local court on Wednesday sentenced two persons to double life imprisonment for raping and murdering a 17-year-old girl here four years ago.

The prosecution case was that Kannan alias Tamilazhakan, Ramkumar and Samiyappan had trespassed into the girl's house on July 12, 2011, and raped and murdered her. They had also robbed the jewels of the plus-two student, who was alone at home that day.

Kannan's wife Renuka was also arrested while allegedly trying to sell the jewels. Kannan was detained under Goondas Act, considering his previous crime record.

Delivering the judgment, Mahila court Judge M P Subramanian ordered Kannan and Ramkumar to undergo two life sentences for rape and murder, which they should undergo concurrently.

The judgement on another accused, Samiyappan was kept pending as he was undergoing treatment for depression at a hospital in Chennai.

Renuka was acquitted as the guilt against her was not not proved.
