Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today extended her International Women`s Day greetings, exhorting the fairer sex to take a pledge to boldly face challenges and create a "new history."
In an official statement here, she recalled her government`s various pro-women initiatives including cradle-baby scheme to prevent female infanticide, marriage assistance scheme, mixer-grinders and fans provided free of cost to women and providing free sanitary napkins.
"Let us take a pledge that women should face the challenges boldly, convert failures as stepping stones towards success and create a new chapter," she said while recalling the verses of popular Tamil poet, Subramania Bharathy who had sought gender equality.
Meanwhile, the government announced that Dr V Shantha, chairperson of the city-based Cancer Institute, has been chosen for the Avvaiyar Award for the year 2013.
The government had constituted the award last year to honour women for their contribution in the fields of social reforms, women`s development, religious harmony and administration, among others.
The award carries Rs one lakh, 8 gm gold medal, and certificate and it will be presented to Dr Shantha by Jayalalithaa on March 8, the release added.
