ED to probe cash haul from Bengal civic engineer

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will be joining the probe into the recovery of a huge amount of cash from the house of a civil engineer in West Bengal, official sources said on Monday.

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) will be joining the probe into the recovery of a huge amount of cash from the house of a civil engineer in West Bengal, official sources said on Monday.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday seized cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs.21 crore from the residence of Pranab Adhikary, a sub-assistant engineer with the municipality in Howrah district.

Police on August 14 caught Adhikary red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs.1 lakh and on searching the house, cash little over Rs.20 crore was recovered.

The money was found stashed under bathroom tiles, under the mattress and sofa.

ED officials during the day visited the ACB office seeking information about the case.

An ED source said they were taking up the probe as the case comes under the ambit of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Along with Adhikary, his son Tanmay was also arrested by police.

The two were on Monday presented before a court which sent them to police custody till August 29.
