Police officer killing: Manhunt for Trinamool councillor, Congress leader
Kolkata: The CID has launched a massive manhunt to arrest Trinamool Congress Councillor Mohammed Iqbal and Congress leader Moktar for their alleged involvement in the killing of a police officer in Garden Reach last Tuesday.
"Raids are on to nab them. We have raided several places including their houses. We are hopeful that they will be arrested sooner than later," ADG (CID) Sivaji Ghosh told PTI while speaking about the search for TMC councillor Mohammed Iqbal and Congress leader Moktar of Garden Reach, whose names figured in the FIR.
Police Commissioner R K Pachananda was removed from his post yesterday, two days after the policeman, Tapas Chowdhury, died in a clash between Congress and Trinamool Party workers during a college election here, and was replaced by Surojit Kar Purokayastha. The investigation in the case was also taken over by the CID, which generally probes cases under the jurisdiction of the West Bengal police, from the Detective Department.
The detective department earlier arrested 12 persons in connection with the sub-inspector`s killing on February 12.
Meanwhile, the new police chief, Surojit Kar Purokayastha visited the family of the slain SI in Thakurpukur.
"Those who have been named in the FIR should have been arrested whichever part of the world they are in. Why were they not arrested? Because of that I had to take action," the chief minister had told reporters at Writers` Buildings after removing Pachananda.
