The Oval: Australia have experimented throughout Ashes 2013, but their move to bat Shane Watson at No. 3 in the fifth Test, finally paid off when the struggling all-rounder slammed his third Test century on Wednesday.
A lot was expected from Watson being a senior player in the team, but the 32-year-old managed to score just one half-century ahead of the final Test in six innings. With a highest score of 68 in the series, Watson was under pressure to score a big knock, and runs finally flew through his bat when he batted at No. 3. Watson was hit below his right ear by a Stuart Broad bouncer when he was batting in his nineties. The all-rounder took some time to regain his composure and resumed batting after receiving some medical treatment. Watson’s last century (126) came against India at Mohali in 2010. His century against England came off 114 balls as he drove James Anderson through covers. Watto had to wait for 47 innings for his third Test century. While the century would be a huge relief for Watson himself, Clarke and the team management might contemplate batting him at No. 3 in the future Tests.
