US condemns ISIS atrocities in Iraq after over 300 massacred

Washington: In wake of reports of execution of over 300 Iraqi tribesmen by barbaric extremist group Islamic State, the US has condemned the act as deplorable and expressed concern at the resulting humanitarian crisis.

Speaking at 20th Session of the Universal Periodic Review in Geneva, US Representative to the Human Rights Council Ambassador Keith Harper delivered a statement on Iraq's human rights situation in light of the onslaught by ISIS.

“The human rights situation in Iraq is dire. ISIL’s widespread atrocities against the Iraqi people and the resulting humanitarian crisis are deplorable,” Ambassador Keith said.

Commending the Iraqi government to usher in positive steps to improve Human Rights in Iraq, he further urged Iraq to address past violations and abuses.

Among other steps, the US instructed Iraq to “ïmplement its recently enacted National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security” and to ensure the protection of women in the ongoing conflict against the ISIS.

The US statement came after the Iraqi Govt informed that the ISIS had killed 322 people belonging to a Sunni tribe in a recent spate of execution.

A tribal leader also told CNN that those massacred included women and children.

Those killed belonged to a sunni tribe - Albu Nimr, which was said to have taken the side of the US and Iraqi government against the ISIS, fought valiantly for weeks before they ran out of ammunition and food

The executions by the ISIS are in retaliation to the tribesmen taking part in fight against them.

Reports said some 200 bodies were found in the mass graves recently in Anbar province last week. The latest killings took place on Saturday when about 50 more members of the group were kidnapped and feared dead in Hit in Anbar province, the CNN reported.

Albu Nimr tribe has tens of thousands of members and are ready to fight the ISIS to take back the province of Anbar from the ISIS, the report added.

The ISIS overran a huge chunk of territory across Iraq and Syria in June this year and established an Islamic Caliphate, unleashing a terror sparked by massacre of thousands and rape and torture of women.

The ISIS' barbaric onslaught continues across Iraq and Syria despite US coalition carrying air strikes to check their advance.
