Sudanese sex convict not to be deported from Britain

London: A 24-year-old Sudanese migrant who was convicted as part of a predatory sex gang cannot be deported to his country because he is a member of a tribe persecuted by government forces and Arab militia, a media report said. Jumaa Kater Saleh was convicted for the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl, the Daily Mail reported. But he was allowed to remain in Britain under human rights law because he faced ill treatment if sent back to Sudan. He claimed he was a member of the Zaghawa tribe, which was persecuted by government forces and Arab militia, the daily said.

The man can now stay indefinitely in Britain, unless a court decides it is safe for him to return to Africa. Saleh recently went to court to demand compensation from the government for locking him up. He claimed he was unlawfully detained following his prison sentence, when he was kept behind bars to protect the public. But the judge rejected his claim, saying he posed a risk to the public and keeping him locked up was necessary. IANS
