The ISIS militants have reportedly taken over the towns of Sinjar near Syria.
Islamic state captured large parts of Northern Iraq in an offensive in June. According to the BBC, UN special envoy to Iraq Nickolay Mladenov said that a `tragedy` was taking place in Sinjar.
The UN expressed concern for the safety of civilians in the area.
The situation of these civilians was reportedly miserable and they were lacking basic items like food and water.
Two Yazidi shrines were also destroyed in the area.
