War and Pics: NATO, EU leader discuss Ukraine war, present a united front against Russia

US President Joe Biden said that NATO has "never been more united than it is today" in the face of Russia`s ongoing war against Ukraine. Addressing the media after a NATO summit here on Thursday, Biden said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "getting exactly the opposite of what he intended to have as a consequence of going into Ukraine".

NATO leaders meeting in Brussels agreed to help Ukraine protect itself against any chemical, biological or nuclear attacks. However, leaders from countries that represent more than half of the world`s GDP fell short of satisfying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy`s pleas for tighter sanctions and European Union nations remained divided over imposing an embargo on Russian energy.

Ruling out any military involvement in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (local time) said that France has decided to "step up" work to prevent escalation of the war.

Macron`s remarks came during a press conference after a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit and Group of Seven meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday.

President Biden delivered powerful closing remarks about why Europe--the EU, NATO, the transatlantic alliance--is so important to the US.

Notably, before heading for the Council meeting, Biden had said that he would "discuss China" with the European Council, reported CNN. On being asked if he trusts China, Biden said, "Yes," before adding "well, we`ll discuss China. I`ve spent some time with Xi Jinping and I hope we`re gonna get the chance to discuss China.

NATO leaders promised Kyiv new military support and assigned more troops to the alliance`s eastern flank while London and Washington imposed fresh sanctions on Moscow during a trio of summits on Thursday aimed at showing Western unity against Russia`s war in Ukraine.
