Scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose’s 158th birthday: Google celebrates with a doodle!

The popular search engine giant Google on Wednesday paid tribute to one of India's greatest scientist Jagdish Chandra Bose on his 158th birthday with a creative doodle.

New Delhi: The popular search engine giant Google on Wednesday paid tribute to one of India's greatest scientists Jagdish Chandra Bose on his 158th birthday with a creative doodle.

The scientist is best known for his work in biophysics and science of plants and made various contributions in the field of physics, biology and archaeology.

The doodle on the homepage features the scientist sitting in his laboratory with a plant and crescograph, an instrument he invented to analyse plant responses to different stimuli and measure growth. The invention of crescograph has helped scientists to better understand the cultivation of crops.

Born on November 30, 1858, at Mymensingh, now in Bangladesh. Jagdish Chandra Bose was raised in a home committed to pure Indian traditions and culture. He studied physics at Calcutta university, went to Cambridge for his Bachelor’s degree, and returned to India in 1884 where he continued his research.

Prior to his death in 1937, he set up the Bose Institute in then Calcutta (now Kolkata), which is one of the oldest and premier research institutes.

To recognise his achievements in the field of wireless telecommunications, a small impact crater on the far side of the Moon has been named after the scientists. It is located close to Crater Bhabha and Crater Adler and has a reported diameter of 91 kilometres.
