Today’s day belonged to Joe Root. He is unbeaten at 178 and one of the reasons for England’s huge lead. Australians will need a stellar performance to take the series. It’s tough task ahead for the Aussies. England might bat for a while, and we might even see Root reach his double century to help England secure a 2-0 series lead. ==================================================================================== Over 101 || Score 293/5 Bell is on a roll. The partnership has cruised past 150. A couple of boundaries from the duo. England continues to cruise along at a comfortable rate. In the 92nd over, Ian Bell is out on a Steven Smith delivery! Not a good way to get out, but Bell has shown his supreme class in Ashes 2013. Jonathan Bairstow is the new batsman. It is yet not clear how long will England stay out there. Root scores 150. What an amazing innings for Joe Root. Despite the help from the surface, Agar can't find the turn necessary to trouble Root. Bell-Root partnership now of 100 runs. Ian Bell gets his half century. Bell’s remarkable form continues. He reaches his 36th Test 50. England looks in control of the match. The steady run continues. Joe Root gets his first century as a Test opener and first hundred against Australia. Incredible moment for the young man. Fifty-run partnership by Root and Bell. England leads by 411 runs. ==================================================================================== Over 78 || Score 171/4 Post lunch, Agar comes into attack for the first time. He conceded just one run in the 70th over. Meanwhile, Clarke and Smith are both still aghast at the umpire’s decision. This is the only talking point of Lord’s right now. Root is standing strong and continues to show good patience. He is now at 97. England is not rushing at the moment and continue to dominate. Root will have to wait for his century. It’s time for tea-break. He delivers a short ball and this time he gets his man. Bresnan is dismissed at 38. Fourth wicket for Australia . Rogers took the simple catch on the leg-side. Root-Bresnen partnership ends at 99. The in-form Ian Bell is the new batsman. Even after the wicket, it still doesn't look good for Australia. England lead by 375 runs. There’s lot of drama in the 68th over. Bell has played the ball to gully and Steve Smith apparently has taken the catch. He claims he has, but the umpires want to check. The replays appear to show that Smith's fingers are under the ball, but the third umpire does not seem convinced. And it’s not out. Joe Root is quite comfortable at 63 and could well score a century. Australia continues its pursuit of a breakthrough. For England, 2-0 lead is the most likely result at the moment. Pattinson begins the 52nd over with a couple of short-pitched deliveries but Bresnan is not troubled. Good start to the session for the bowler by a maiden over. Pattinson pleads for LBW when he nips one back at Bresnan in the 54th over, but Clarke isn't interested in reviewing. A dull period of the match. Post lunch, Australia is building pressure with quite a few maiden overs. The lead is 359. We've seen the better bowling from Pattinson but what Australia needs now desperately is wickets. Agar can't find any big turn to worry Root. Harris is back in the 45th over. Just a boundary from the 46th over. Seems, Clarke changing his strategies. Steven Smith comes into the attack with 10 minutes remaining in the session, in the 48th over. Four from Smith's first over. Agar completes the final over of the session without conceding a run. End of session. Good session by England. Root and Bresnan have added 83 to the total for the loss of no wickets. It's a fine partnership. England looked hard last night but are now in a very strong position. By the end of 35th over, the umpires call for drinks, so the players took a quick break. From 36th over, Clarke has given the ball to Ashton Agar. Australia needs a wicket now. Root is technically sound and is looking good. Root is forced to defend for most of the over but he shows his class from the final ball to drive Siddle straight down the ground for four runs in the 37th over. Root and Bresnen bring up the fifty run partnership in the 38th over. Now it’s time for Clarke to use his Cricketing acumen. Root reaches his half-century with a solid punch off the back foot. Root is looking rock solid at the moment. ==================================================================================== Over 30 || Score 56/3 England batsmen have come up with a strategy of wait and watch. Bresnen and Root are playing carefully. Though the Australian bowlers are trying hard to get the first breakthrough of the day but they haven’t managed to get one. In the 27th over Bresnan edged the ball, but it didn't carry to third slip. With the help of a few boundaries England managed to cross the 50 runs mark without losing a single wicket on the third day. ==================================================================================== Over 20 || Score31/3 Graeme Swann`s fifer put hosts England on top as they bowled out Australia for 128 and took a 264-run lead on day two of the second Test at Lord`s here on Friday. Australia, though, managed to reduce England to 30 for three in the second innings at stumps to give themselves some hope of a fightback. Captain Alistair Cook (8), Jonathan Trott (0) and Kevin Pietersen (5) were all dismissed in the space of five overs in a late flourish for the Australians. Joe Root was not out on 18 and was joined by nightwatchman Tim Bresnan who is yet to open his account. The Australia came bounced back at the end of the day, especially Peter Siddle. Third day is quite crucial for both the teams as it might decide the fate of the match and most probably the series. Australia will try to start the day from where they ended yesterday’s last session.
