Mohali: Pankaj Dharmani was today named captain of the Punjab Ranji Trophy squad that also included out-of-favour India middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh.
The state senior selection committee met here and announced a 15-member team for the first two Ranji Trophy matches, against Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.
The first match against Uttar Pardesh will be played from November 1-4 at Meerut while the match against Karnataka will be held from November 10-13 at PCA Stadium, Mohali.
The meeting was attended by selection committee chairman Chaman Lal Malhotra, Balbir Singh (Patiala), Harvinder Singh (Amritsar), Harjinder Singh (Jalandhar) and Bhupinder Singh Sr, a Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) spokesman said.
The meeting was convened by MP Pandove, honorary secretary, PCA.
Yuvraj has been going through a lean phase after being dropped from the 15-member Indian squad for the three-Test series against New Zealand at home. He also failed to find favour with the selectors for the two-Test series against Australia earlier this month.
Medium pacer Navdeep Singh of Jalandhar and opening batsman Sarul Kanwar of Chandigarh are the two debutants in the team while pacer Love Ablish has been ruled out of the squad due to hairline fracture in his right hand finger.
Ablish has been advised two weeks rest, the PCA spokesman said.
The squad: Pankaj Dharmani (C), Yuvraj Singh, Ravi Inder Singh, Sarul Kanwar, Uday Kaul (Wicket keeper), Vishwas Bhalla, Karan Goel, Sarabjit Singh Ladda, Rajwinder Singh, Navdeep Singh, Harmeet Singh Bansal, Rahul Sharma, Bipul Sharma, Mandeep Singh and Bharat Lumba.
