Sheetal Mafatlal granted bail on Rs 5 lakh bond

Mumbai, June 09: A local Mumbai court on Monday granted bail to Sheetal Mafatlal on Rs 5 lakh surety. She had been remanded on judicial custody on Monday till June 12. Sheetal will also have to pay a customs duty of nearly Rs 18 lakhs. Sheetal Mafatlal, president of Mafatlal Luxury, was on Sunday detained upon arrival at Mumbai international airport for allegedly carrying undisclosed jewellery and diamonds worth several lakhs of rupees, custom officials said here on Sunday. The jewellery and diamonds could be worth between Rs 51 lakh and one crore, Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) sources said, adding that exact valuation is yet to be ascertained. Acting on a tip off alleged to be by someone in the family , the AIU officials intercepted the noted socialite at the airport and checked her bags in which the jewellery and diamonds, which was allegedly not declared, were found, officials said. She was subsequently detained by the police and sent to judicial custody.
