America`s Jenn Suhr wins gold in pole vault
Jenn Suhr of the US claimed Olympic gold Monday in a subdued pole vault final where defending champion Yelena Isinbaeva had to settle for bronze. Suhr, the Beijing silver medalist behind Isinbaeva, jumped 4.75 metres for gold, the most modest mark for gold since Sydney 2000. Yarisley Silva of Cuba vaulted a national record of 4.75 on her second attempt for a surprise silver. Kenny had earlier broken the Olympic record with a qualifying time of 9.713 seconds and won both of the first two runs to beat Bauge in the final on the best-of-three system. The race for the gold medal was a rematch of the world championship final in Melbourne in April, when Bauge took the title. Red Letter day for Cyprus as they get their first ever medal at the Olympics Pavlos Kontides won Cyprus` first medal at an Olympics when he took the silver Monday in sailing`s Laser class. Kontides and Tom Slingsby of Australia were the only sailors who could have won gold in the medals race. Felix Sanchez had won the event at the 2004 Athens Games but had crashed out in the semifinal at the Beijing Olympics. The fourth round will start in a short while. Standing Below par shooting by both the Indians-Gagan Narang and Sanjeev Rajput- in the standing round. Narang at 25th while Rajput at 27th position. Standing Narang shoots 97 in first series. Sanjeev Rajput scores 96 and 95 in the first two series. Total- 191. Meanwhile Vikas Gowda has qualified for the final round of the discus throw event via automatic qualification on Monday. He qualified after a throw of 65.20 meters. The final is on Wednesday 12:15 am (IST). Gagan shoots 99 in 4th series. Total-398 (out of 400) in prone position. Only top 8 shooters qualify to the final. They will carry their qualification points to the final round. The winner will be declared after adding both the scores of qualification and the final. Gagan Narang: Perfect 100 for Narang in 3rd series. Total- 299. He is overall 3rd now. Good start by Narang. He shoots 100 and 99 in the first two. Total after 2 series- 199 Rajput shoots 99 in 3rd series. Total- 295. Rajput shoots 98 each in first 2 series. Total after 2 series- 196 Men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions is underway. Narang and Rajput in action. Indian boxers M.C. Mary Kom and Vijender Singh will be in action on Monday. Successfully overcoming their opponents will assure them at least a bronze medal each.
