London: If left with a lump in your throat after watching perhaps the greatest Olympian swimming in his last career race on Saturday, well a blockbuster Sunday is here to cheer you up.
Medals Table » India’s Schedule Day 9 (Sunday)» Day 8: India Roundup» American swimmer Michael Phelps ended his illustrious career after a golden finish to his last ever race collecting yet another yellow metal in the 4x100-meter medley relay on Saturday. Sunday promises to be a thrilling and one of the most entertaining days of the 2012 London Olympics when Lightning and Beast clash for what promises to be the greatest 100m dash of all times. Jamaica’s showman Usain Bolt and compatriots Yohan Blake and Asafa Powell along with American Tyson Gay and Justin Gatlin will be competing in the ‘Blue Riband’ event of the Olympics. At the end of it, either an authority will be stamped forever or a new champion will take centre stage. Bolt, who eased to the 100 metres title in Beijing with a then world record timing of 9.69s, bettered it in the world championships the following year by .11s. He lost his world crown in 2011 after a false start where Yohan Blake emerged victorious and in recent national trials too he outpaced his more eminent opponent. On the other hand, what is turning out to be one of the most frustrating wait for a Grand Slam title, Britain’s Andy Murray has a chance at redemption. In a repeat of the Wimbledon final that he lost last month, the Scot will be gunning for glory when he squares-off against Roger Federer on Sunday. And what better stage than Olympics to prove that he isn’t a choker. Also in action will be India’s five-time women’s world boxing champion MC Mary Kom as the event makes it Olympic debut. She will be in action in 51 kg flyweight class in the round of 16. As India’s sole entry in the event, she is one of the top medal prospects.
