Sensex retreats after hitting all-time high of 25,375.63

Profit-booking trimmed early gains and the Sensex was quoting 301.65 points, or 1.26 percent higher at 24,207.25 after hitting a low of 23,873.16.

Counting trends showing the BJP-led NDA getting over 300 seats in general elections 2014 gave a fresh boost to domestic markets Friday with the BSE benchmark Sensex zooming to new all-time high of 25,375.63 and NSE Nifty surging to 7,563.50.

BJP was leading in 332 constituencies as per the trends available at 543 seats across the country.

3.45 PM: Sensex up 216 points to close at new closing peak of 24,121.74. Nifty rose 80 points to end at 7,203.

2 PM: Profit-booking trimmed early gains and the Sensex was quoting 301.65 points, or 1.26 percent higher at 24,207.25 after hitting a low of 23,873.16.

The NSE's 50-share Nifty was trading up by 101.70 points, or 1.43 percent, at 7,224.85, after breaching the psychological 7,500-mark to touch an intra-day peak of 7,563.50.

12.30 PM: Sensex was quoting 941.81 points, or 3.94 percent higher at 24,847.41. The 50-share Nifty was trading up by 288.45 points, or 4.05 per cent, at 7,411.60.

11:50 AM: Sensex was ruling at 24,760.92 points after touching the highest ever mark of 25,375.63 points in the early trade, up 855.32 points, or 3.58 percent from its previous day`s close.

The 50-scrip Nifty of the National Stock Exchange also surged in a similar fashion. It gained 268.75 points or 3.77 percent and was trading at 7,391.90 points after crossing 7,400 points in the early trade.

10:45 AM: The Nifty hit a record high of 7,563.50. Lenders such as ICICI Bank surged nearly 10 percent while HDFC Bank rose 7.8 percent with the NSE banking index hitting a record high of 15,742.05 points. The Bank Nifty was trading up 8.3 percent.

Among other blue-chips Reliance Industries gained 6.1 percent while HDFC gained 4 percent.

The rupee was trading at 58.73 per dollar after rising as much as 58.62.

Stocks of three listed firms of the Gujarat-based Adani Group soared as much as 17 percent as counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections showed that BJP-led NDA is coming to power.

Adani Enterprises' stock zoomed 16.87 percent to Rs 585 -- its 52-week high on the BSE.

Shares of Adani Power climbed 8.28 percent to Rs 59.50, while Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone surged 6.83 percent to hit its one-year peak of Rs 235.40.

10:05 AM: The BSE Sensex extended its early gains and quoted up by 1,344.84 points or 5.63 percent to 25,250.44 after hitting intra-day high of 25,375.63, (up 1,470.03 points from its previous close).

The Nifty also zoomed by 363.05 points or 5.10 percent to 7,486.20. The partially rupee rose to 58.68 per dollar, its strongest level in 11 months.

9:30 AM: The BSE Sensex touched a life high of 25,033.36 in trade while the 50-share NSE Nifty recorded its all-time high of 7,459.40 by rising 336.25 points, or 4.72 percent.

The partially convertible rupee was trading at 58.80 per dollar after hitting as much as 58.71. The local unit closed at 59.29/30 on Thursday.

All the sectoral indices, led by banking and consumer durables, were trading in the positive territory with gains up to 8 percent.

Among the 30-Sensex stocks -- SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were the top performers during the initial trade with the banking index leading among the 13 BSE sectoral indices. It was up by 7.78 percent to 17,554.70.

9:15 AM: The 30-share index rose by 1,024.82 points to 24,930.42. The National Stock Exchange index Nifty breached the 7,400 level for the first time.
Brokers said sustained capital inflows by foreign funds at the domestic bourses and widespread buying by retail investors as counting trends showing the BJP-led NDA forming the government lifted the key indices to new highs.

Among other Asian markets, Tokyo's Nikkei stock average dropped 1.6 percent, dragged lower by the yen's gains against the dollar, which could put pressure on the earnings of Japanese exporters. The Nikkei has shed 0.9 percent so far this week.The Dow Jones industrial average fell 167.16 points or 1.01 percent, to end at 16,446.81. The S&P 500 lost 17.68 points or 0.94 percent, to 1,870.85. Both posted their biggest daily percentage declines in slightly more than a month.

The Nasdaq Composite dropped 31.33 points or 0.76 percent, to 4,069.29.
