London: Four people were killed and 40 injured in Wednesday's terror attack outside the Parliament in central London.

A terrorist suspect mowed down pedestrians on a bridge and stabbed a police officer outside Parliament complex before being shot dead by Scotland Yard officers in an incident inspired by "international terrorism".

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack as "sick and depraved".

"The location of this attack was no accident," she said in a statement outside her 10 Downing Street office late in the evening.

"The terrorist chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech."

Parliament's lower House of Commons, which was in session at the time, was suspended and lawmakers were asked to stay inside the building for several hours.

May said Parliament would convene as normal on Thursday in a sign that the attack would not disrupt life in the capital.

PM May was bundled into her car by a plain-clothes police officer and driven quickly from the scene as the attack unfolded. She will chair a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra Committee.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed anguish over the terror attack.

“Deeply saddened by the terror attack in London. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” PM tweeted.

“At this difficult moment, India stands with UK in the fight against terrorism,” his another tweet said.

Rowley, also London's top anti-terror officer, said that the officer who died in the attack has been named as Keith Palmer, who was 48 and had 15 years service as a police officer.
