New Delhi: The counting of votes for the high-stakes assembly polls in two southern states- Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry, is underway.
As per the initial trends, M.K. Stalin's party DMK has taken an early lead in Tamil Nadu with 97 seats, while AIADMK is leading on 62 seats. In Kerala, as per the early trends, LDF is leading on 89 seats, while UDF is leading on 47 seats. Meanwhile, in Puducherry BJP is leading on 9 seats followed by Congress on 6 seats.
The trends are available since 8 AM and are being updated every minute on the Election Commission of India's website - https://results.eci.gov.in.
All necessary arrangements have been made by the Election Commission for counting which began at 8 am across counting centres. The outcome of assembly polls is likely to have implications for politics at the national level.
The exit polls for the four states and a Union Territory predicted a clear victory for DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu, LDF retaining power in Kerala and BJP-led NDA in Assam and a tight contest in Bengal with several surveys giving an edge to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, the assembly polls will be the first in the absence of two towering leaders of the state and former chief ministers J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi. The fate of 3,998 candidates was sealed during polling on April 6. The state has 234 constituencies. While ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) made a determined bid to retain power, the DMK-led alliance campaigned hard to oust it.
DMK has been out of power since 2011. Makkal Needhi Maiam has also made efforts to put up a strong fight. Several other parties were also in the fray.
The DMK-Congress alliance is looking to dethrone the AIADMK alliance and are likely to cross the halfway mark of 118 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Kerala
In Kerala, leaders of both LDF and UDF have expressed confidence of victory in Kerala polls ahead of counting. The counting of votes for the 140 member assembly will begin at 8 am. The polling was held in a single phase on April 6.
The exit polls have indicated that the ruling LDF will create history by getting re-elected but leaders of Congress-led UDF have rejected these surveys and expressed confidence of their alliance coming to power in the southern state. LDF leaders have said that the exit polls reflect the acceptability of the ruling alliance among people.
Puducherry
In Puducherry, the polls predicted victory for NDA. The results will decide the fate of 324 candidates. The battle is seen mainly between NDA and Congress-DMK alliance. Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam is also in the fray. The exit polls have predicted victory for NDA.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan wins from Dharmadam Assembly constituency.
With the official trends showing the DMK leading in 118 seats and the ruling AIADMK in 82 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday congratulated DMK president MK Stalin.
Taking to Twitter, Yadav wrote, "Congratulations to MK Stalin ji and the dedicated DMK and alliance workers for this resounding victory. TN people are desperately waiting for progressive pro-people policies under your able leadership."

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday (May 2) congratulated DMK president MK Stalin for a 'resounding victory' in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly polls, as official trends clearly suggest that DMK is leading in 118 seats, followed by the ruling AIADMK leading in 82 seats.

Kerala: E Sreedharan is likely to lose from Kerala's Palakkad. UDF is leading by over 1200 votes, with counting in one LDF dominated panchayat left. Even if Sreedharan gets all postal ballots.
Kerala: State BJP President K Surendran virtually lost both seats he contested. Surendran is trailing by 1,143 votes in Manjeswaram (after all rounds counted), and has been pushed to distant third place in Konni.

Tamil Nadu: Despite a ban on victory processions imposed by the Election Commission (EC) in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the country, DMK workers and supporters were seen celebrating in large numbers outside Anna Arivalayam, the party headquarters here.
The order copy by the Election Commission read, "In view of the surge in COVID 19 cases throughout the country, the Commission has decided to make more stringent provision to be followed during the process of Counting, in addition to exiting Broad Guidelines dated 21st August, 2020 and has directed that no victory procession after the counting on 2.5.2021 shall be permissible."

Tamil Nadu: DMK President MK Stalin leads from Kolathur Assembly constituency.
Congress is leading by 38,844 votes in Kanyakumari constituency, where Congress MP Vasanth Kumar had died of COVID-19 few months ago. His son, Vijay Vasanth Kumar, is contesting on Congress ticket from his seat.
Kerala: In Palakkad, 'Metroman' E Sreedharan leads by 7,000 votes after 10 rounds of counting.
Kadakampally Surendran is now leading by 16,159 votes in Kerala's Kazhakkoottam, defeating BJP's firebrand leader Sobha Surendran.
Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala leads in Haripad by 9,526 votes.

Kerala: CPM Minister TP Ramakrishnan heading for a victory in Perambra Kozhikode. Actor Suresh Gopi, contesting on BJP ticket, has taken a lead in Thrissur by 3,752 votes.

Puducherry: The AINRC-led NDA was leading in 9 seats while the Congress headed alliance was ahead in three segments after first round of counting of votes polled in April 6 elections, officials said.
According to trends available till 10.30 am, AINRC chief N Rangasamy was leading in his constituency. The NDA-led front comprises the AINRC, AIADMK and BJP.
Tamil Nadu: In Coimbatore South constituency, MNM chief Kamal Hassan is back with a slim lead at end of third round with 2,010 votes. Congress' Mayura Jayakumar is at 1,926 and BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan is at 1,379.
Kerala: Ruling LDF continues to maintain lead in Kerala Thiruvananthapuram. The ruling LDF maintained its lead in 88 of the 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala while the opposition Congress-headed UDF was ahead in 50 segments, as per latest trends.
Tamil Nadu: CM Palaniswami is leading in Edappadi at the end of fifth round. ADMK- 30,559 votes and DMK- 10,123 votes.
Kerala: In the 140-member Kerala Assembly, according to the latest reports the Left leads in 80 constituencies while the Congress-led UDF is ahead in 58 and the BJP in two seats.
Puducherry: Congress is leading on three seats while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on two seats, according to the initial trends as counting of votes in the Puducherry polls has commenced.
Tamil Nadu: DMK is leading in 24 seats and AIADMK on 23 seats, states the latest ECI trends.

Tamil Nadu: DMK takes lead on 58 seats, while AIADMK leads in 40 seats.
Kerala: LDF takes lead on 75 seats, while UDF leads in 49 seats.
Puducherry: BJP takes lead on 6 seats, while Congress leads in 4 seats.
In Tamil Nadu, as per the early trends, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leads in five seats, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is ahead in one seat.
Intial trends in Kerala show that of the 87 constituencies, the ruling Left leads in 50 seats, when counting of postal votes were taken up first at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Congress-led UDF leads in 36 and the BJP on one seat.

Kerala: Over 24,000 polling officials, including reserve personnel, would be participating in the counting exercise and as many as 30,281 police personnel, including 3,332 from the central force, have been deployed in the State on the counting day.

Puducherry: As many as 1,382 personnel would be deployed for counting of votes in the UT, while about 400 police personnel shall be on security duties.

Tamil Nadu: Over 16,000 personnel have been deployed to perform the counting exercise. Postal ballots would be taken up first and EVM votes half-an hour later. The counting centres, with CCTV surveillance, have been brought under a three-tier security cover with personnel from Central Armed Police Forces and the state police guarding the strong rooms. The arrangement is set to continue till the completion of the process.
Tamil Nadu: Counting is set to start at 8 AM in 75 counting centres across the state and all arrangements are in place to smoothly conduct the exercise, which would be monitored by observers, authorities said. Chennai has three counting centres, Loyola College, Queen Mary's College and Anna University.
