Seoul: North Korea is allowing daily coverage of the London Olympics to be shown on its TV network, a South Korean broadcaster who arranged technical logistics for the North has said. According to The Wall Street Journal, the country will broadcast the Games for five hours daily; however, the broadcasts are not live. The Games are not broadcast live due to limited transmission hours of state-run TV, which is off air at night, when most events take place in London, the report said. The coverage comes as North Korean athletes are giving in their best Olympic performance since the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona. The length of the coverage is unusual for the country, where the regime has taken total control over broadcasting images of foreign countries and events, the report added. In a statement released in Seoul, Kim In-kyu, president of Korean Broadcasting System of South Korea, provided details about how North Korea was using the images. Kim, chief of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, or ABU, said he made technical arrangements for North Korea’s access to Olympic coverage. Kim also said North Korea has sent six reporters to the Olympics.
