Kolkata: Sunil Narine might be troubling batsmen with his `mystery` spin, but the West Indies offspinner revealed on Friday that out-of-form India opener Virender Sehwag is the ’toughest’ to bowl to.
"The toughest batsman would be Virender Sehwag," said Kolkata Knight Riders spinner.
"No matter what the situation of the game is, he goes out there and plays his role. So he makes it difficult to bowl at him," Narine told reporters on the sidelines of his team`s practice session at the Eden Gardens.
He rated Muttiah Muralitharan as the best spinner.
Narine, who was instrumental in KKR`s triumph last season being their leading wicket-taker (24), started off with a bang this season as well, having claimed four for 13 in the tournament opener to steer the Knight Riders to a six-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils.
The West Indian bowler said he did not try anything differently but stick to the basics.
"My preparation is nothing different but sticking to the basics," he said.
Stating that the Indian conditions favour him, Narine said, "Indian wicket suits spinners a lot and I think it favours me a bit. Not sure about the batsmen being intimidated by me. I`m just giving my best.
"I`m just working hard at the nets. I`m finally reaping rewards. Every batsman is different. You just have to concentrate and do what you`re accustomed to doing."
He also credited his KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir for using him well.
"Gauti has a good idea about the game and he has handled me well. I just enjoy the game when I step on to the field be it good or bad. Hopefully I [will] continue doing it."
Narine admitted that it`s the white cherry that has brought him more success.
"I`m a lot more successful with the white ball. But, I`m comfortable bowling both white and red ball," he said.
The spinner said that more than winning the purple cap for him, he would like his team to win the ongoing sixth edition of the Indian Premier League.
"I am not really eager to get the Purple Cap. I prefer if the team does well, we won and I don`t get a Purple hat to getting one in a losing cause," Narine, who was pipped by Morne Morkel (25 wickets) for the Purple Cap last season, said.
He said he was relishing bowling at the death overs.
"Two things can happen while bowling at the death overs. Either you get wickets or you go for runs. It gives me an opportunity to get more wickets at the end."
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has described Narine as a bowler with the ‘golden arm’ and he said it meant a lot.
"To get praise from a great batsman means a lot. I`m just enjoying the moment and don`t want to get carried away."
Asked whether he has specific strategy for Rahul Dravid when his team will take on Rajasthan Royals on April 8, he said, "We have not discussed the team as yet."
On Chris Gayle`s explosive form, Narine hoped that his West Indies teammate fails when KKR play Royal Challengers Bangalore.
"Gayle is a specialist T20 batsman. He is one of the best present out there. Hopefully he misses one against us."
Insisting that he would have preferred bowling to Sunil Gavaskar than Sachin Tendulkar, Narine said, "I`ve already played against Sachin, but I`ve not bowled to Gavaskar yet."
On the tag of `mystery` spinner, he said, "In world cricket, spectators and others choose a name and I`m just going with it."
The bowler, meanwhile, attributed his success to his signature Mohwak hairstyle.
"It`s not a style statement... I had it for a while and it got me success and I`m just continuing with that," he revealed.
