The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has generated 78.59 crore Aadhaar numbers as on March 9 although they are not mandatory for availing the benefits under various schemes, Parliament was informed Thursday.
Government on Wednesday approved Phase -V of Unique Identification project which entails generation of 100 crore Aadhaar numbers by 2015 including enrolments done under the National Population Register.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reviewed progress of Aadhaar project and is believed to have discussed the possibility of using the platform to resume Aadhaar-based direct benefit transfers of subsidised schemes.
The long-wait for the unique
identity number would soon be over with the UIDAI, which
issues Aadhaar cards, deciding to inform residents about their
numbers through e-mails and SMSes, before sending it by post.
UIDAI has generated over 3.11 crore
`Aadhaar` numbers till the beginning of this month, with
Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka having garnered the
maximum numbers so far, the government said on Wednesday.
