NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The meeting comes just a day after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a massive victory in the civic polls in Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
The elections were being seen as a popularity test for Yogi Adityanath as it comes eight months after the BJP won the assembly elections in the state. The CM did not leave any stone unturned to campaign in the state ensuring a win for the party in 14 of the 16 mayoral seats.
Calling it a "historic win", he credited the victory to PM Modi's vision and BJP president Amit Shah's guidance.
Pointing out that the Congress has been wiped out in its pocket-borough of Amethi, he took potshots at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi saying it would better for those criticising the Gujarat model of development to learn from the defeat in Amethi.
He said that the party will now look forward to achieving the goal of one hundred per cent success in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
In the results on Friday, Mayawati-led BSP sprang a surprise as it thwarted the challenge from BJP candidates to win the mayoral posts in western UP's Aligarh and Meerut towns. Akhilesh Yadav-led SP failed to win a single mayoral seat.
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that the results reaffirmed people's support for the GST which has made doing business "easier" for traders.
BJP chief Amit Shah said that it was clear that the people had embraced the economic reforms and rejected politics of caste, appeasement and dynasty.
The results are all the more a boost to the saffron party as they come days before the high-stakes Gujarat Assembly polls.
