Agra: In view of an ongoing controversy over Taj Mahal, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sought an explanation from BJP MLA Sangeet Som on his controversial statement on the iconic monument located in Agra.

Media reports quoted sources close to the as saying that the Sardhana MLA has been asked to explain the reason for issuing such statements which have triggered a huge row and embarrassment for the party.

In a bid to the opposition fire criticism on the party, the Chief Minister has even decided to visit the 17th century architectural marvel during his proposed visit to the city on October 26.

Interestingly, the BJP had earlier distanced itself from Som's remarks, saying it was his personal view and the party has nothing to do with it.

CM Yogi Adityanath too sought to put the controversy to rest by saying that the Taj mahal was built by the sons of Bharat Mata and it's the pride of the country.

Speaking on the issue, BJP state spokesperson Chandra Mohan was quoted as saying that the party does not agree with Som's remarks.

"Our party is doing a lot for development of tourism in Agra and we are making schemes for the same," he added.

Meanwhile, adding a fresh twist to the controversy, the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board on Tuesday said the Taj Mahal cannot be a symbol of "worship" as it was built by ''Mughals'' who were ''aiyaash'' (dissolute)".
