A court in Assam has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on the man, who was convicted under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act. The convict will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of six months if he fails to pay the fine.
In yet another brutal incident, a minor girl was allegedly raped and her half-burnt body was later found at the house of the accused in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. The six-year-old girl was allegedly raped, killed and then set on fire. Her body was recovered at a house in a village in Tanda on October 21 (Wednesday). Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has directed Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta to ensure proper investigation into the matter.
In the wake of Unnao and Hyderabad rape and murder cases that shook the entire nation, the Centre has taken a pathbreaking decision. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has written to all the Chief Justices of all High Courts in the country directing them to complete all cases of rape and those registered under the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act within six months.
