In a major anti-narcotics crackdown, Central and state security forces have destroyed more than 306 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in Manipur’s mountainous Kangpokpi district within six days, effectively foiling an attempt to manufacture opium worth several crores of rupees, officials said on Sunday.  

It is worth noting here that in a series of well-coordinated counter-insurgency operations across the North East, the Assam Rifles have successfully thwarted repeated attempts by insurgent groups – ULFA (I) and NSCN – K(YA) – to target security Forces in recent weeks.

Manipur's Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), N. Ashok Kumar, said that in recognition of the sacrifices made by the families of the deceased, the government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for those who succumbed to injuries (death) and Rs 2 lakh for those who sustained grievous injuries.

Defence spokesman Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said that based on specific intelligence, Assam Rifles troops launched multiple Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) at Saikhumpai areas in Champhai District on Wednesday.

Assam Rifles seized 1.041 kg of heroin and 9.381 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 40.05 crore from an abandoned place in Mizoram, smuggled from Myanmar.
