Smuggled gold worth Rs 46.4 lakh seized from Chennai airport

In separate cases over the weekend, the Chennai Air Customs have seized a total of 891 grams of gold from international passengers who flew in from the middle-east countries. The seized gold is reportedly valued at Rs 46.4 lakh. In the first case on Saturday, a 32-year old passenger hailing from Madurai, who had arrived from Dubai was intercepted and searched. Two bundles of gold paste weighing 133 gm, valued at Rs 6.93 lakh were recovered from the rectum. On frisking, two other passengers hailing from Chennai who arrived from Dubai were found carrying two gold bars weighing 232 gm each and one gold cut bit weighing 31 gm concealed in their pant pockets. A total of 526 gm of gold valued at Rs 27.4 lakh was recovered. On Saturday night, two passengers who hailed from Trichy and Chennai respectively were intercepted on suspicion of carrying gold. The personal search revealed four bundles (two each) of gold paste in their socks and two gold chains (one each) were recovered from their pant pockets. Total 232 gm of gold valued at Rs 12.16 lakh was recovered and seized.

MDMA tablets worth Rs 5 lakh smuggled from Netherlands seized in Chennai

The first parcel contained 105 MDMA tablets with “PP” marking commonly known as “Philipp Plein”. The parcel was addressed to an individual in Chennai city, but the address was found to be incomplete. 60 MDMA “Blue Punisher” pills embossed with skull mark were recovered from the second parcel. These tablets contain around 300mg of MDMA which is a very high dose. The parcel arrived from Zwolle, a city in the north-eastern Netherlands and was addressed to a person in Tirupur district.

Psychotropic drugs worth over Rs 12 lakh seized by Chennai Air Customs

Based on intelligence, Chennai Air Customs officials intercepted postal parcels suspected to contain psychotropic drugs which were bound for the US. On inspection, it was found that the parcels contained 3440 tablets of psychotropic drugs and they were seized under the NDPS Act, 1985. The parcel contained 234 strips of Addwize 10mg (Methylphenidate), 50 strips of Lonazep 1 mg (Clonazepam) and 40 strips of Zolfresh 10 mg (Zolpidem). 2340 tablets of Methylphenidate, 600 tablets of Zolpidem and 500 tablets of Clonazepam were recovered from them.

MDMA pills, crystals worth Rs 7 lakhs seized at Chennai Airport

"This is the first time that we are seizing pills and crystals concealed in a toy box. However the other parcels were not camouflaged and the drugs were kept in packets” Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner, Customs told WION. Follow up searches were carried out and further investigation is in progress.
