Watch: Hima Das qualifies for women's 200m semis at CWG in style

It was a good start for star Indian sprinter Hima Das as she qualified for the women's 200m semi-finals after winning her heat with an impressive timing of 23.42s at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Thursday (August 4). The 22-year-old girl from Assam led the five-woman field from the start with Rhoda Njobvu of Zambia clocking 23.85s to finish second while Jacent Nyamhunge of Uganda finished third with a timing of 24.07. There are six heats lined up in the women's 200m and the top-16 will qualify for the semi-final.

Hima Das wins 200m gold in her first race after more than a year

The 21-year-old Hima, the 2018 world junior champion in 400m, won the race in 23.31 seconds. She ran faster only three times earlier in this distance -- twice in 2018 when she clocked 23.10 seconds in the National Inter-State Athletics Championships in Guwahati and 23.22 seconds in a Grand Prix meet in Poland and once in 2019 when she clocked 23.25 seconds in Czech Republic.

Sprinter Hima Das to be appointed DSP by Assam government

The cabinet also amended the integrated sports policy of the state for the appointment of sportspersons as Class-I and Class-II officers in different departments of the state government. She won the fifth medal at the Nove Mesto Athletics Meet on July 20, 2019. She had clocked a timing of 52.09 seconds to complete the 400m race, registering her season-best timing. Hima, known as ‘Dhing Express’, won three gold medals at different events - Klado Athletic Meet, Kunto Athletics Meet, and Poznan Athletics Grand Prix.

Star sprinter Hima Das, others complain of poor food quality at NIS Patiala

Star sprinter Hima Das and some other atheletes have complained about the quality of food being served to them at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NS-NIS) in Punajb's Patiala. Das and others have said in their complaint that they are being served low quality food at the institute’s mess in mid-August. It is learnt that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has taken cognizance of the matter and has set up a ‘Food Inspection Committee’ address the grievances of the athletes.
