In 2018, Shivpal Singh Yadav separated from the Samajwadi Party and formed his own Progressive Samajwadi Party. After that, the Uttar Pradesh government feared for Shivpal Yadav's life and he was given 'Z' category security. The government also allotted the luxurious bungalow number 6 of Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg to Shivpal Yadav.
The UP government’s move to downgrade Shivpal Yadav's security has not gone down well and evoked a strong response from the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party. Extending support to the PSPL leader, his nephew, Akhilesh Yadav, called the move "objectionable" and also hit out at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for likening his uncle to a pendulum.
Taking a jibe at Shivpal following the recent developments, CM Yogi, while addressing an election rally in poll-bound Mainpuri, said, "He has become something like a pendulum, or a football that gets kicked by both teams. We saw how last time he was insulted on stage through denial of a chair and had to sit on the arm of a chair".
The by-election for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat will be held on December 5 and the result will be declared on December 8. Filing of nominations for the bypoll has started, and November 17 is the last date for filing of nomination. The Mainpuri parliamentary seat fell vacant following the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav on October 10.
