JAC steps up pressure on Centre for decision on Telangana

The all-party JAC spearheading Telegana movement tonight decided to stick to its decision to get en masse resignations of public representatives accepted.

Hyderabad: The all-party Joint Action
Committee (JAC) spearheading Telegana movement tonight decided
to stick to its decision to get en masse resignations of
public representatives accepted if the government failed to
make a categorical positive statement on the demand for the
separate state by tomorrow.

"All political parties together have decided that if the
Centre failed to make a positive announcement by January 28,
all public representatives of Telangana should get their
resignations accepted.

"Accordingly, we have decided to meet the Assembly
Speaker on January 29 after offering tributes to the Telangana
martyrs," TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao told reporters
tonight after a meeting of JAC.

"Congress MLAs are camping in Delhi to lobby with party
high command for a positive statement. If the statement comes
tomorrow, that is fine. Otherwise, we will go ahead with our
plan to get the resignations accepted," he said.

Some of the Congress MLAs have also indicated they would
join a meeting of JAC scheduled to be held tomorrow evening,
Rao said.

Senior TDP MLA N Janardhan Reddy asked the Congress
leaders to either secure a time-bound programme for formation
of Telangana state or join the agitation.
Gilani said there was no threat to the system or
democracy due to the apex court`s ruling and there would not
be a clash among institutions of the state.

All institutions, including parliament, executive and
judiciary, are playing their respective roles, he added.

He also said the government is committed to the balance
of power between the presidency and parliament.

The President`s decision to transfer the chairmanship of
the National Command Authority, which controls Pakistan`s
nuclear arsenal, from himself to the Prime Minister reflected
this position, Gilani said.

It is also unthinkable that the President will use his
sweeping powers to dissolve parliament and dismiss the premier
when the government is headed by his own party, Gilani said.

Democracy must prevail as Pakistan cannot afford another
dictatorship and power should be shared between the government
and the opposition but not with other non-political forces, he
said.
