Odisha Police to summon Mumbai woman in Iyer arrest case

With contradictory stories appearing over the arrest of Deccan Chronicle vice-chairman PK Iyer from a star hotel here, the Odisha police on Friday said it would soon summon the woman in whose name the room was booked.

Bhubaneswar: With contradictory stories appearing over the arrest of Deccan Chronicle vice-chairman PK Iyer from a star hotel here, the Odisha police on Friday said it would soon summon the woman in whose name the room was booked.

"We will certaintly issue a summons in the name of Chitra Athwani. The hotel records showed that the room was booked in the name of Chitra where Iyer had been staying," Commissioner of Police R P Sharma told reporters here.

Earlier, the police had summoned the General Manager and other staff of the hotel. Three senior officials of the hotel have already deposed before the police here.

Now Chitra's statement is required to ascertain why she allowed her name to be used for lodging Iyer in the hotel, sharma said.

Police sources said Iyer had first arrived at the hotel with Chitra on February 14 at about 2 AM. They had stayed together for 10 days after which the woman had left the hotel. Iyer, however, booked a room in the same hotel in her name after her departure and continued to stay, according to prelimnary investigation by the police.

Iyer was on the run after CBI issued a non-bailable warrant against him. Iyer, accused in a bank fraud case in Hyderabad, was arrested by the police here on June 6 and subsequently handed over to CBI, police said.

So far, the police have have found that Chitra works as an air hostess.
