Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday said that Bihu is the lifeline of Assamese culture and binds together people of all faiths.

"Bihu is the lifeline of Assamese culture. We must uphold the culture that is rooted to the soil," Gogoi said at a Magh Bihu function here today.

The way people are celebrating Bihu today with joy and merriment is a clear indication that Assam is moving towards peace and prosperity, he said.

"It's good to see people in urban areas including Guwahati celebrating Bihu as in the rural areas. This augurs well for the state," the Chief Minister said.

Gogoi further said that Bihu is a festival that transcends the barriers of caste, creed or religion and is celebrated by different communities.

"Bihu is in essence a festival of oneness that binds together people of all faiths and promotes harmony and brotherhood. Let the spirit of Bihu bring an end to the cult of violence," he said.
