Hajipur (Bihar): Lynching of a middle
aged dalit man allegedly by some upper caste people has
sparked violence at a village in Bihar`s Vaishali district, in
which an attempt was made to torch a house, official sources
said on Sunday.

Lalbabu Paswan (55) was beaten to death at Gurmiya
village under Kartahan police station for taking cattle
through a piece of land belonging to the upper caste people,
damaging cauliflower plants on Friday evening.

Angry with the killing, a section of dalits from the
village held protests yesterday and made an abortive attempt
to burn a house, the sources said.

Footage beamed on a local TV channel showed some
policemen, while controlling the crowd, assaulting a youth
with shoes and sticks.

Tension prevailed in the area after the incidents and
patrolling was intensified, the sources said.

Twenty four persons were named in the FIR lodged in
connection with the killing.
