Rajnandgaon: A police official was on Monday injured in a gun-battle between security personnel and Naxals in dense forests in this district of Chhattisgarh.

The exchange of fire took place under Bakarkatta police station limits this evening when security personnel were carrying out a search operation based on inputs, a senior police official said.

Daniyakona-Gerukhadan-Devracha tri-junction, the security personnel spotted a Naxal camp and started encircling it.

Sensing the presence of the security personnel, the rebels opened indiscriminate fire, leaving a Sub-Inspector rank official, Santram Soni, injured, he said.

Jawans launched a retaliatory attack, forcing the Maoists to flee, he added.

"Soni sustained splinter injury on his chest and was referred to a hospital in Bhilai after preliminary treatment at a local hospital," he said, adding his condition was said to be stable.

A large cache of Naxal-related material was recovered from the spot, he said.

Reinforcement of security men was rushed to the spot soon after being informed about the gun-battle and a combing operation was underway in the region to apprehend the ultras, the officail added.
