Security beefed up in Chhattisgarh in view of Naxal threat on Republic Day

Security has been tightened in Chhattisgarh, especially in the Naxal-hit regions, in view of the Republic Day celebration Monday, police said.

Raipur: Security has been tightened in Chhattisgarh, especially in the Naxal-hit regions, in view of the Republic Day celebration Monday, police said.

Stiff security arrangements have been put in place in the state, particularly in Bastar region to avoid any disturbances by the rebels during Republic day celebrations, a senior police official said.

"This time we are extra cautious, as naxals have put up posters and banners appealing people to boycott US President Barrack Obama's visit, along with Republic day celebrations in Bastar," the official said.

Naxals had been putting up banners and dropping pamphlets in several areas of Bastar from the past one week calling for a nationwide bandh on January 26.

Armed guards have been deployed at all the important government establishments. Besides, patrolling has been intensified in the interior forest pockets and inter-state borders to check suspicious movements, he said.

"Additional security arrangements have been put in place at the headquarters of each of the districts of Bastar division comprising Sukma, Dantewada, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, Kanker and Bastar districts," the police official added.

Meanwhile, the state government has accomplished all the preparations in all the 27 districts including the capital Raipur to celebrate the Republic day.

Governor Balramji Das Tandon will hoist the national flag at the Police Parade ground in Raipur in the morning and receive the guard of honour by different units of security personnel, an official statement said here.

These security forces include- State Police, Chhattisgarh Armed Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Home guards,District Police Force, Jail Security jawans, NCC cadets and National Social Service students.

The Governor will then address the State on the occasion, followed by presentation of cultural programmes based on patriotic songs by students and tableaux of various departments.

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh will unfurl the tricolour at Bastar district head-quarters town Jagdalpur and Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gawrishankar Agrawal at Sarguja district head-quarters Ambikapur.

Other state ministers will take part in the Republic Day celebrations to be held at different places in the state, it added.
