Seven including five women killed after tractor plunges into canal in Chhattisgarh

Seven people including five women were killed and atleast 10 others injured when the tractor they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a canal in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district, police said today.

Raipur: Seven people including five women were killed and atleast 10 others injured when the tractor they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a canal in Chhattisgarh's Janjgir-Champa district, police said today.

The accident took place late last evening near Faguram village under Dabra police station limits while the victims were returning after attending a family programme at Khorsipali in neighbouring Raigarh district, a senior police official said.

"Five people identified as Prem Singh Gond (40), Omprakash Gond (15), Sonmati Gond (60), Mongra Bai Gond (62) and Gungun Gond (5) died on the spot. While two other women- Malti Markam (35) and Ganeshi Bai (40)--succumbed while being shifted to a Raigarh hospital," he said.

They all were natives of Darramudi village in Malkharauda area of Janjgir-Champa, around 200 kms away from here.

Atleast 24 people of a family were travelling on the tractor. The driver lost control over the steering at a sharp turn near Faguram village following which the vehicle went off the road and fell into the canal leaving two men, as many women and a girl child dead on the spot, he said.

A police team rushed to the spot and admitted the injured to Kharsiya hospital from where the critical ones were shifted to Raigarh town.

Two of the victims died while being shifted to Raigarh for further treatment, he added.

A case has been registered in this connection, he said, adding further probe was on.
