Raipur: Ten women including a minor girl were killed today and 27 others injured when a van carrying a marriage party overturned after colliding with a truck trailer in Chhattisgarh's Balod district.

Police suspect that the driver of the van was in an inebriated state.

The incident occurred in the wee hours at Armur Kasa village under Dallirajhra police station limits when the matador was heading towards Dallirajhra from Bhaiyahar village, Balod Superintendent of Police Sheikh Arif Hussain told PTI.

The vehicle, with around 40 people on board, most of them women, turned turtle following a severe head-on collision with the trailer truck coming from the opposite direction near Armur Kasa, leaving 10 women, including a minor girl dead on the spot, the SP said.

Besides, 27 passengers were injured, five of them seriously, he added.

Soon after being informed about the mishap, a police team rushed to the spot along with medical aid and the injured were shifted to a local hospital, he said.

"Five seriously injured have been shifted to Durg for further treatment," he said.

According to preliminary investigation, the driver of the matador van was allegedly in an inebriated state which led to the accident, he said.

A case has been registered and further probe was on.
