62-yr-old man jailed for four years for trying to rape minor

A Delhi court has sentenced a 62-year-old man to four years in jail for trying to rape a three-and-a half-year-old girl.

New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a 62-year-old man to four years in jail for trying to rape a three-and-a half-year-old girl, observing that such "nefarious" assaults are on the rise.

Additional Sessions Judge Illa Rawat sentenced Narela resident Akroor to four years of rigorous imprisonment and said his act would have "far-fetched and irreparable" consequences in the life of the girl.

"The act of convict, though on face of it, is not gruesome, but has had far-fetched and irreparable consequences on the life of a minor girl child."

"The instances of minor girls being victim to such nefarious acts and deeds are on rise and thus, no leniency is called for in the matter. However, considering the advancing age of the convict, slightly lenient view is taken and I hereby sentence Akroor to undergo rigorous imprisonment of four years...," the judge said and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict.

The court directed the senior citizen to pay Rs 20,000 compensation to the victim through her mother.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the morning of August 11 last year when the child had gone to the house of Akroor, who was her neighbour, for playing.

When her mother was searching for her, another girl told her that the child had gone to Akroor`s house and on reaching there, the woman saw that the accused was trying to rape her daughter, the police said.

The woman raised an alarm and thereafter, her husband also reached there and caught the accused. They then informed the police.

Akroor had sought leniency on the ground of his old age and that he was suffering from various age-related ailments and has to support his family members.
