Cops injured in shootout, 3 held

A police constable and a homeguard were injured when they were shot at by three armed assailants who were stopped for violating traffic norms in Dwarka in south-west Delhi.

New Delhi: A police constable and a homeguard were injured when they were shot at by three armed assailants who were stopped for violating traffic norms in Dwarka in south-west Delhi.

During patrolling in Dwarka Sector 23 at around 1.45 am Wednesday night, constable Sona Ram and Homeguard Ramesh stopped three men for riding on a bike.

"Instead of stopping, one of them pulled out a country-made pistol and open fired at Sona Ram and robbed his service revolver. Two of the accused then fled the spot on a bike," a police officer said.

Ramesh chased the third accused who shot at him. But, other policemen managed to nab him.

He was later identified as Ali, resident of Swaroop Nagar.

On sustained interrogation, Ali revealed the identity of his two accomplices. After raids, the other two were nabbed and identified as Sultan and Nasir.

The three were carrying illegal weapons and to escape apprehension, they opened fire at the policemen.

Police said that the condition of both victims is said to be out of danger.

A case has been registered and further investigation is on, the officer said.
