New Delhi: Expressing serious concern over the recent incident of sexual assault of a woman by a cab driver, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh on Monday lauded the police for nabbing the accused and appealed for speedy justice.

"This is the second such incident for which accused Shiv Kumar Yadav has been apprehended ...This is a big achievement for the police that he has been caught and he would be produced before the court," Shukla told a news agency here.

"I would only appeal that the accused should be produced before a fast-track court and that the victim be given speedy justice," she added.

The woman was raped by an Uber cab driver earlier on Friday when she hired the taxi to go back to her home in Northwest Delhi, leading to outrage and fear about the safety of women in cabs.

The accused driver, who was arrested yesterday in Mathura, has now been revealed as a repeat offender. According to reports, he was imprisoned in the Tihar jail for 10 months while being tried for allegedly raping a 22-year-old employee of a Gurgaon pub.
