A 55-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) staffer was mowed down by a truck here early on Monday morning, police said.

New Delhi: A 55-year-old Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) staffer was mowed down by a truck here early on Monday morning, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Subedar Major Kuldeep Chand Sharma. He was a Hindi translator at the ITBP national headquarters here.

In the incident which took place at around 5 A.M. Near Gate No.3 of Kashmere Gate Metro station in north Delhi, Sharma was hit by a speeding truck bearing a Haryana number plate as he was crossing the road.

"The truck driver fled the spot in his truck but was nabbed after PCR vans gave chase and intercepted it. The truck driver, identified as Naresh (40), has been arrested," police said.

A case of rash and negligent driving causing death has been registered at Kashmere Gate police station against the driver of the truck.

Sharma hailed from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and was returning after holiday to join duty today. He lived in the Sangam Vihar area of East Delhi.

"Sharma is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son who live in Mandi. His body would be sent to his hometown tomorrow where his last rites will be performed with full honours," an ITBP official said.
