In a shocking incident, a PhD student of prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has accused a research scholar of repeatedly sexually assaulting her.

New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a PhD student of prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has accused a research scholar of repeatedly sexually assaulting her.

The accused, who has completed his PhD in Computer Science, stays in a rented place at the Munirika locality in south Delhi, while the victim stays in hostel.

The incident came to light when the alleged victim called up the police on Tuesday and informed them about her ordeal. The police immediately took her to AIIMS for medical examination.

The victim has alleged in her complaint that she was friendly with the accused and he used to visit her at hostel room frequently. The girl has told the police that on pretext of marriage the accused developed physical relations with her. She even accused her friend of filming the act on one occasion.

The alleged victim is a resident of Chandigarh, while the accused hails from Patna in Bihar.

The girl also alleged that the accused often took her to his Munirika flat and raped her.

In her complaint, the PhD student has maintained that the accused threatened her of severe consequences when she stopped talking to him few days ago.

The police has launched a manhunt to nab the accused.

Earlier this year, Delhi Police had said that there has been a 43.6 percent increase in Delhi`s crime graph in 2013 over 2012, and crime against women rose a whopping 412 percent in the past year.

Rape cases increased from 680 last year to 1,559 this year and in 96 percent of the cases, the victim was known to the accused. Close to 90 percent of these cases were solved, Delhi Police had said.
