MCD move to collect property tax from unauthorised colonies

Keen to increase tax revenue from low-collection areas, the MCD has asked owners of properties in unauthorised colonies.

New Delhi: Keen to increase tax revenue from
low-collection areas, the MCD has asked owners of properties
in unauthorised colonies, unauthorised regularised colonies
and urban villages to pay their dues by March 31, while making
it clear that these places are not exempted from property tax.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has issued a public
notice to clarify the matter.

"It has been noticed that some of the property owners of
the urbanised villages, unauthorised colonies and unauthorised
regularised colonies are under the impression that their
properties are exempted from payment of property tax," the
notice said.

The civic body cited provisions under the DMC Act, 1957
and schedule of taxes 2009-10 approved by the corporation to
drive home the point that no exemption from property tax is
available in such areas.

MCD officials said the property tax collection in such
areas are low and the civic agency aims to increase the
revenue from such colonies.

The property owners in urbanised villages, unauthorised
colonies and unauthorised regularised colonies must pay taxes
for both residential and non-residential properties by March
31 this year and for subsequent years, the MCD said.

The civic body had earlier said the properties of Delhi
Jal Board and power discoms will be considered as commercial
properties for calculation of property tax.
