MCD not informed about Ramlila cancellation: Delhi mayor

New Delhi: Taking issue with Delhi Police for
canceling permission for Ramdev`s congregation here, Mayor Rajni Abbi has written to the Commissioner of Police asking why the MCD was not informed about the decision.

She pointed out that the Ramlila ground, where the yoga
guru was holding his anti-corruption hunger strike before a
midnight crackdown on his supporters by police on June 4, is a
property of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

The MCD, in which BJP is in a majority, has earlier said
that it had given permission to Ramdev to hold a 30-day yoga
camp at the site.

"The permission for holding the yoga camp at Ramlila
Maidan was given by Municipal Corporation of Delhi as this
ground is the property of MCD.

Later, the permission was canceled by the Police
Department without giving intimation to the land owning authority -- the MCD," Abbi said in a letter to city Police Commissioner B K Gupta.
"I would like to know under what circumstances the
permission was canceled by Delhi Police and why the MCD was
not informed," she said.
Police had said law and order concerns and threat
perception to Ramdev had prompted it to cancel the permission.
They also said that the yoga camp was turned into a hunger
strike site.

Abbi had earlier took objection to the fact that she was
not allowed to enter the ground by policemen when she went to
inspect the ground in the morning of June 5, following the
crackdown that injured over 60 people.
