New Delhi: Cracking down on alleged dereliction of duty and absenteeism among municipal teachers, the MCD has suspended a principal and 18 teachers while terminating 14 other contractual teachers.

A team of inspectors led by Director (Education), Deputy
Commissioner Shahdara North Zone and members of the Monitoring
Committee appointed by the Delhi High Court visited an MCD
primary school in Rajeev Nagar yesterday and found that its
sanitary condition was poor, the MCD said in a statement.

Besides, several teachers were found absent without
intimation, and discipline at the school was not found up to
the mark, it said adding, principal Dharam Veer Singh was
placed under suspension with immediate effect.

Seven regular teachers of the school have been placed
under suspension as they were found absent without intimation.
Contractual appointment of 14 teachers have been terminated
with immediate effect for the same reason.

In a bid to give out a strong message that such laxity
will not be tolerated, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi also
sought explanation of the School Inspector concerned as "he
had not visited the school for the last four months," it said.

Eleven regular teachers of an MCD primary school at
Mukundpur in Civil Lines Zone have also been placed under
suspension with immediate effect as they were also allegedly
found to be absent without intimation. The action followed an
inspection of the school by the Deputy Commissioner and Deputy
Education Officer of Civil Lines Zone.

The civic body has warned that dereliction of duty by
teachers will be viewed seriously and absenteeism will not be
tolerated.
