Over 22,000 people booked for drunk driving this year in Delhi

Delhiites do not seem to be bothered about the law, with over 22,000 people being booked for drunk driving.

New Delhi: Driving under the influence of alcohol could land one in jail but Delhiites do not seem to be bothered about the law, with over 22,000 people being booked for the offence this year and 6,173 of them landing behind bars.
As many as 22,111 people were caught for the offence till November 15 this year and 6,173 of them were sent to jail, Delhi Police said.
While the number of offenders caught last year was 15,474, those sent to jail was little over 2,000.

"This year, though we have clear one-and-a-half-months left as figures are available for prosecutions only up to 15th November, we have had 22,111 people who were caught for drunk driving," Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg said.

"Clearly prosecutions have increased by 50 per cent and the way we are going we may touch 25,000 prosecutions," he wrote on social networking site Facebook.

He also asserted that Delhi Traffic Police is committed to make roads safer in the capital and that it has succeeded in that as there is a huge decline in accidents this year.

"This decline in accidents is unprecedented third year in a row and we intend to continue our good work," Garg said.
