New Delhi: The power demand in the national
capital today broke all previous records when it went up to
4,720 MW, the highest ever peak demand in the city.
The previous highest power requirement in the city was
recorded on June 21 this year when the demand had touched
4,688 megawatts.
"The peak demand touched an all time high of 4,720 MW at
4:10 pm today," a power department official said.
As the demand shot up significantly, several areas across
the city faced a string of power cuts ranging from one to
three hours. Some areas in South Delhi faced outages due to
planned shut down of major transmission lines to facilitate
carrying out work related to the Commonwealth Games.
In East and North Delhi also, many localities faced
outages for two to three hours. The power demand in the city
has been on the rise in last two months.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, addressing a function
earlier, asked discoms to improve performance, saying there
was no power shortage in the city and outages were taking
place because of local faults and lack of proper maintenance
of the distribution network.
"There is no shortage of power in Delhi. We have enough
power. Some areas are facing power cuts due to local faults
and it is the responsibility of the discoms to ensure
uninterrupted power supply," she said.
The highest power demand in 2008 was recorded at 4,034
MW, while the highest peak demand in 2006 was 3,626 MW. The
power demand in the city has been increasing steadily in the
last few years.
